Our Implementation Approach
What We Do – Our Focus Areas
We concentrate our efforts on the most prevalent cancers in Nigeria
Breast Cancer
We aim to improve early detection and treatment outcomes. The First Ladies and the member NGOs that constitute FLAC support the institution of screening programs in health facilities and are setting up a network of screening and diagnostic facilities in FLAC states. We also work with partners in the pharmaceutical industry to provide access to treatment programs.
Prostate Cancer
We are actively advancing community awareness and early detection of prostate cancer by embedding prostate health education and screening into primary health outreach initiatives. FLAC NGOs provide PSA testing and facilitate timely referrals to tertiary centers for diagnosis, treatment, and supportive care.
Cervical Cancer
We promote HPV vaccination and cervical screening as a routine part of primary healthcare across Nigeria. Our NGOs provide cervical screening services and link women to treatment.
Childhood Cancer
We prioritize awareness of early signs and symptoms to improve survival rates. We develop and deploy informational materials for healthcare workers. We also invest in improving care facilities, having funded the renovation of a childhood cancer ward at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, and provide financial support for treatment services.
We Tackle The Cancer Journey Across Multiple Stages
Awareness
We adopt a community-centered approach to increase cancer awareness among the general population and encourage the adoption of healthy lifestyles. Our approach also involves working with primary healthcare workers and Patent and Proprietary Medicine Vendors (PPMVs), who are the first points of call in our health system.
Prevention
We work with state ministries of health, development partners, and the pharmaceutical industry to increase access to HPV and Hepatitis vaccination services.
We Have Launched The FLAC Vaccine Access
Programmed to offer an alternative pathway for adolescent girls to access HPV vaccines. Our advocacy efforts have contributed to the introduction of HPV vaccination into Nigeria’s routine immunization schedule, which is a monumental achievement for the country.
Early Diagnosis
Our awareness activities are integrated into screening programs that have referral pathways into cancer diagnostic and treatment services. In partnership with Roche, we are growing a network of FLAC Screening Clinics that provide breast and cervical cancer screening.
Policy
We leverage our collective political platforms to build support for the prioritization of quality cancer care services by all levels of government and the private sector. We released and disseminated policy statements and calls-to-action to state and federal governments demanding the prioritization of cancer care services.
